Fun Facts About Gelato

Fun Facts About Gelato

Italy has bestowed us with many culinary gifts, and that includes gelato. This refreshing dessert has a history as diverse as the colors and flavors that it comes in. Before you run to find this dessert in Trumbull, Connecticut, check out these fun gelato facts:

  • A Sicilian fisherman opened the first Parisian gelato shop in 1686. It is called CafĂ© Procope and is still operating in the city.
  • The name of this frozen treat came from the word congelato which means “frozen.”
  • Gelato is similar to ice cream because it contains sugar, milk, and flavors, but gelato has less cream and no egg yolks.
  • Gelato is a very healthy dessert. Most normal ice cream has 10% to 17% milkfat in it, while gelato only contains between 3% to 8% milk fat.
  • A scoop of gelato usually weighs more than a scoop of ice cream due to its lower air content. Lesser air also means gelato melts in your mouth faster.
  • Gelato is not actually frozen. Normal ice cream is stored in zero to five degrees Fahrenheit, while gelato is kept at 10-15 degrees Fahrenheit.
  • There is a Gelato World Cup. International teams from countries including Japan, Morocco, the United States, and Spain, travel to Italy every other year to compete and make their best gelato dishes, sundaes, and ice sculptures.

Gelato has come such a long way for our enjoyment and how it conquered the world. Many ice cream shops that offer sweet treats in Stamford, Connecticut, had also recreated their version of gelato.
